The EEC courts John Bull

The EEC courts John Bull

Neil Lonsdale’s cartoon of 25 May 1961 is titled ‘What’s she got that I haven’t got?’. The British government – represented by John Bull – had begun discussions about joining the European Economic Community (EEC), shown as an attractive blonde. This was a major concern to New Zealand, the jilted lover, which saw its previously secure market for meat and dairy produce under threat.
