Gate Pā battle

Gate Pā battle

Horatio Robley made this watercolour showing the attack on Gate on 29 April 1864 by imperial forces. Robley was a lieutenant in the 68th Regiment and the painting shows his men advancing on the trenches firmly held by Ngāi Te Rangi and Ngāti Ranginui men. After the initial exchange of shots there was considerable use of mere (clubs) and bayonets. Several such attacks were unsuccessful and in the end the defenders abandoned the pā under cover of darkness.
