'Bradford-On-Tone, Geoffrey Gorer's cottage'

Frances Hodgkins, who painted this picture in 1940, was one of a number of prominent New Zealand artists, writers and scholars who left New Zealand in the first half of the 20th century to pursue their interests overseas. Some, such as author Katherine Mansfield, continued to write about their New Zealand childhoods – but others, such as Hodgkins, focused on the society and landscape of Europe. The lack of a developed cultural infrastructure in New Zealand (including publishers, galleries and grants) made it very difficult for creative artists to remain in New Zealand in those years.
