Joseph Ward and government members, 1916

During the First World War, Prime Minister William Massey formed a National government with the Liberal Party, led by former prime minister, and long-time Southland member of Parliament, Joseph Ward (centre, with cigar). Robert McNab (far left) and Josiah Hanan (third from left, foreground) were also Southlanders, although in 1916 McNab represented a North Island electorate.
