Bush clearing near Ōeo, 1893

This watercolour by Thomas Good shows a typical bush clearing in the forested areas of the North Island. In this case, near Ōeo, Taranaki, settlers got established on the land before a local town was set up. In other places the town preceded settlement on the land.
