This television clip gives a glimpse of one of the most remarkable innings in New Zealand test cricket history. It was the first test against England at Jade Stadium, Christchurch, on 13–16 March 2002. New Zealand began its second innings requiring 550 runs to win; and when the sixth wicket fell the score was only 252. Nathan Astle then proceeded to pummel the English bowlers in a spectacular display of controlled hitting. He reached his double hundred in 159 balls, the fastest in tests among all countries. Astle was the last man out with his personal score at 222, and the team score at 451, leaving England victorious by 98 runs. The second test was drawn but New Zealand won the third test by 78 runs, so the series was shared.
