The Taranaki exhibition was held in 1891 to mark the 50th anniversary of the arrival of settlers to New Plymouth. Like other provincial jubilee exhibitions, the Taranaki event was designed to show off local manufactured goods and produce. This certificate was awarded to Edward Moyle for first prize in the rope section. The iconography on the certificate – ferns, Māori implements and images of pastoral progress – was characteristic of the symbols of national identity in late 19th-century New Zealand.
