The Gisborne Photo News reports in 1965 on Captain M. Carter, matron of the Salvation Army's Edward Murphy Hospital in Gisborne, handing a baby born to an unmarried mother over to the child’s adoptive parents. In 1964 the hospital took in 40 pregnant single women, whose babies were all adopted.
