This is the start of the motor launch race at the Ponsonby Regatta on the Waitematā Harbour, on 17 December 1904. In the early 20th century many yachting regattas such as this one included races for motor boats. Some yachtsmen regarded motor boats as dirty and noisy, but others eagerly embraced the new technology.
