Demise of Waihi Borough Council, 1989

In a 1989 event marking the demise of the 87-year-old Waihi Borough Council, each councillor in turn sat on stage as a candle was snuffed out behind them. The council was absorbed into the Hauraki District Council. At this time many other local authorities around the country were also amalgamated into larger entities.
