Story: Local and regional government

Reforming Auckland Regional Authority, 1985

This 1985 TV news clip refers to turmoil within the Auckland Regional Authority, whose chair, Fred Thomas, was at odds with many of his council members. One of those was Waitakere City mayor Tim Shadbolt, who believed that local authorities should be left to resolve disagreements without central government interference. Local Government Minister Michael Bassett, however, suggested that legislative reform might be needed.
