Boxing, 1912

Boy scout camps were part of a movement designed to provide citizenship training. In 1912 at Northcote Scout Camp (Campbells Bay, Auckland) Charlie Thompson and Royce de Luen practised boxing, their audience distracted by the photographer. Sometimes called the ‘manly art’, boxing was seen as an acceptable form of violence.
