Story: Gender diversity

Tom Hamilton

Tom Hamilton

Aucklander Tom Hamilton works for a community law centre and has played competitive sport at a high level. He was assigned female at birth and transitioned to live as a man while living in the US. Hamilton believes that transgender people should be legally able to change their sex and have that documentation recognised worldwide. In 2014 he helped present a petition to Parliament’s health select committee seeking an increase in funding to allow people to access counselling, gender-affirming surgery and other health services.
