Amanda Owen (left) helps Otago University student Nicky Crawford move furniture into her new flat (one of a row of terrace houses dubbed 'the Coronation Street flats') in Dundas Street, Dunedin, in February 2010. For young people, beginning tertiary study or getting their first job often coincides with leaving home. The late teenage years and leaving your teens are seen as a rite of passage into adulthood. This reaches its zenith in the 21st birthday party, when many are presented with a 'key of life' fold-out book (in the shape of a key) with messages written inside.
