Story: Pacific churches in New Zealand

Maintaining culture

Maintaining culture

Senior members of the Congregational Christian Church of Samoa (CCCS) in Sandringham, Auckland, listen to speeches farewelling their pastor in 2008. Power in churches with a parent church in the Pacific Islands – like the CCCS – is held by men. These churches tend to have more conservative values than the New Zealand-based churches. Their aim is to maintain the religious and cultural traditions of island life rather than adapt them to the New Zealand context.
