New Zealanders’ attachment to the land unites people from different walks of life, with some prizing its spiritual value, others enjoying its recreational features, and others taking pride in its breadth and beauty. In 2008 the then Labour Prime Minister Helen Clark (right) walked a section of the South Island’s Motatapu track (established by the Department of Conservation), near Queenstown, before its opening with Canadian singer and songwriter Shania Twain (left). Twain had purchased a home at nearby Wānaka in 2004.
