New Zealand’s opposition to nuclear testing and nuclear weapons became a widely held value in the country. This was reflected in the country’s 1970s actions against France, at the International Court of Justice in The Hague, in the Netherlands, and in its 1980s nuclear-free policies and legislation, which disrupted its military alliance with the United States and Australia. This 1980s badge highlights concerns about nuclear testing and nuclear waste, as well as New Zealand’s support for a nuclear-free Pacific (largely achieved through the 1985 South Pacific Nuclear Free Zone Treaty).
