Story: Kīngitanga – the Māori King movement

Koroneihana: coronation anniversary celebration

The Kīngitanga traditionally holds a koroneihana (coronation anniversary celebration) each year. It could not be held in 2020 and 2021 because of COVID-19 lockdowns and restrictions. As a result, the 2022 event at Tūrangawaewae marae in Ngāruawahia was particularly special and emotional.

Part of that event was a kawe mate (mourning ceremony), as shown in this video. Waikato-Tainui people from all over the country gathered together, bringing images of those they had lost in the intervening years, to grieve with their iwi and their king.
