Herbs were in the vanguard of the Pacific reggae sound in New Zealand, and many of their songs had a political message. The 1982 song 'French letter' was an overt but upbeat protest against French nuclear testing in the Pacific. The song was re-released in 1995 when the French government announced plans to resume nuclear testing at Moruroa atoll in French Polynesia.
