Ki te taha mauī ko te kara tino rangatiratanga i hoahoatia i te tau 1989 e Hiraina Marsden, rātou ko Jan Smith/Dobson ko Linda Munn mō tētahi whakataetae i whakahaeretia ana e te rōpū porotū Te Kawariki, he kara Māori ā-motu. I te tau 2009 i whakaae te Pirimia a John Key ki te tono a Pita Sharples, Minita Māori ((Ngāti Kahungunu, Ngāi Te Kikiri o te Rangi, Ngāti Pahauwera) ki te whakarere i te kara ki te aro atu ki te tūnga o ngāi Māori hei tangata whenua. Ka tukuna e te Manatū Taonga he aratohu ōkawa mō te whakamahi i ngā kara me te kī, Flying the two flags together on days of national significance such as Waitangi Day symbolises and enhances the Crown-Māori relationship.’
