Ana Hato and Deane Waretini were the first New Zealand singers to be recorded commercially locally. The recordings were made by the Australian company Parlophone during the Duke and Duchess of York's tour of Rotorua in 1927. Hato and Waretini went on to make more recordings with the company, popularising what are now well-known Maori songs, such as 'Waiata poi', 'Pōkarekare ana' and 'Pō atarau'.
