Story: Suburbs

Garden suburb, Ōrākei

Ōrākei, a hillside suburb above Auckland Harbour, was the centrepiece of the first Labour government’s state housing plan in Auckland. It was designed as a garden suburb with curving streets, large green areas and sea views. Such suburbs were the exception in New Zealand, where suburban growth was typically hasty, economical and practical.
