Charles Heaphy produced this map of Auckland in 1851 to identify the original purchasers of Crown land. The properties shown here, on Auckland’s waterfront, were sold in 1841. Some were bought by government officials, who are believed to have used their inside knowledge for personal gain. However many of these buyers suffered when the economy went into recession in 1842.
