Some town maps were combined with advertising and attractive illustrations and became booster publications. This 1860s map of Whanganui depicts a well-planned, orderly settlement. It is bordered by drawings of the burgeoning town’s buildings, to show how civilised and progressive it was. The list of local businesses was an opportunity to advertise products and services as well as conveying how enterprising the town was.
