Martin Rumsby and Chris Barrett were important figures in Auckland’s Alternative Cinema co-operative. Rumsby, who would make his own films later, became an independent distributor, travelling the country with a backpack full of films while surviving on the unemployment benefit. Barrett’s technical ability included making film stock, processing and printing film. With this available, the co-operative was able to run courses in making experimental films.
