The development of New Zealand television’s production abilities can be traced in Country calendar, a Television New Zealand show about farming. First shown in 1966, the series was still going in the 2020s. The first programmes were stiff and sometimes awkward, and largely studio-based. Within a few years outside broadcasts were taken for granted; farmers around the country were interviewed and on-farm activities were filmed as a matter of course.
