The early days of aviation were marred by many mishaps and some fatal accidents. The wreckage of an Avro 504K lies in a New Plymouth paddock after it apparently stalled and spun out of control on 11 November 1920. The pilot, Captain Richard Russell, was killed, along with his passengers – Kathleen Warnock, and James Clark, the mayor of New Plymouth.
