Karl Sim was probably New Zealand’s best known art forger. Specialising in the work of Charles F. Goldie (with sidelines in Frances Hodgkins, Rita Angus and Colin McCahon, among others), Sim sold the works as originals through the antique shop he owned. In the mid-1980s Sim was taken to court for art forgery. Convicted on 40 counts, he was required to paint the Foxton Town Hall and public toilets. After his conviction Sim changed his name to Carl Feodor Goldie so that he could legally sign his paintings ‘C. F. Goldie’, but he now sold the works as homages rather than originals.
