Story: Brass and pipe bands

Caledonian Pipe Band of Southland, 1898

Caledonian Pipe Band of Southland, 1898

Southland's Caledonian Pipe Band was photographed while attending the Otago Jubilee celebrations in 1898. The Caledonian Pipe Band was New Zealand's first civilian pipe band, formed in 1896 by members of the Invercargill Caledonian Society. The band's attendance at the Otago Jubilee was important in promoting the growth of pipe bands;  Dunedin's first civilian pipe band was formed just a few weeks after the event.
