Midland Park, a popular lunch spot for office workers, was built on the site of the Midland Hotel on Wellington's Lambton Quay in 1983. The site was bought by the Wellington City Council in the late 1970s and Midland Park was the first of a number of small parks planned for the CBD.
The park was designed by the council's in-house landscape architect Ron Flook, and is reminiscent of American plaza design of the 1950s and 1960s. The park's main features are generous grassed areas, plain and exposed concrete and a water feature. It was remodelled in 1995, and again in 2011, though Flook's design was for the most part retained.
