Rugby Park, Hamilton, 1959

This aerial photograph shows the crowds cramming into Rugby Park, Hamilton, on 22 August 1959, for Waikato's game against the British Lions. Three years before, the home team had famously defeated the South African Springbok team 14–10, but on this occasion the visitors won 14–0. As can be seen, although the park had opened in 1925, in the 1950s it was still largely a standing ground, with only one small covered stand.
