Māngere International Airport, 1965

Māngere International Airport, 1965

Auckland's international airport at Māngere was officially opened in 1966, but began operating in November 1965, at a time when jet air travel began to change the nature of holidays for New Zealanders. It became much easier to go overseas for a short break rather than the extended period that was inevitable when travelling by sea. This press photograph of the check-in counters, taken in December 1965, shows some of the major airlines that were operating out of the airport from the start.
