The New Zealand AIDS Memorial Quilt commemorates people who have died as a result of HIV/AIDS. Each panel was made by family, partners, friends and colleagues of the person commemorated. The first panel of the quilt was made in 1988. By 1991, when the quilt was officially unveiled, it comprised 32 panels. The quilt has since been displayed throughout New Zealand. This is the quilt just before it was unveiled in Wellington. Peter Beardsley of the New Zealand AIDS Foundation is in the foreground.
