Sifu (teacher) Bill Young sits at front centre in this 1969 photo of the Chinese Martial Arts Association (CMAA). Young was born in mainland China in the 1930s and practised 'eagle claw' kung fu to overcome the effects of polio. He later learned other martial-arts styles and opened a judo and kung fu club in Nelson. In 1968 he and other Chinese martial artists formed the CMAA in Wellington, with an initial membership almost entirely of Chinese students.
