Petera Hudson and his son Ken look at the military medals of their father and grandfather, Sergeant Murray Hudson, in 2008. His medals were stolen along with a number of others (including nine Victoria Crosses) from the National Army Museum in Waiōuru in December 2007 and were recovered in 2008.

Murray Hudson was awarded a posthumous George Cross for gallantry. He was supervising live grenade practice at Waiōuru in 1974 when a non-commissioned officer accidentally armed a grenade. Hudson tried to remove the grenade from the other man's hand to throw it away, but both of them were killed. Hudson's George Cross is on the left of his medals.

The George Cross was a British award ranked immediately below the Victoria Cross, and was awarded to civilians and military personnel for acts of outstanding courage while not in action with an enemy. It was replaced by the New Zealand Cross in 1999.
