Story: Ngā haki – Māori and flags

Pāpāwai marae

Pāpāwai marae

At the opening of the meeting house at Pāpāwai marae in Greytown the Union Jack is being waved. The four official flags raised at Pāpāwai were the Treaty of Waitangi flag (probably the United Tribes flag), Rongopai, Māui (a flag with the demigod Māui standing with one foot on the North Island and the other on the South Island) and the flag of local prophet Pāora Pōtangaroa.
