Corporal Willie Apiata, VC.

Corporal Willie Apiata, of the New Zealand Special Air Service (SAS), received the Victoria Cross in 2007 for bravery under fire while serving in Afghanistan. In 2004 Apiata had rescued a wounded comrade during a night attack on his patrol. The SAS had a troop stationed in the Kabul area, where it acted as a training and support unit alongside the Afghan National Police Crisis Response Unit.
