Fleet week, Auckland

Fleet week, Auckland

This remarkable scene on Queen Street, Auckland, with huge crowds, bunting and welcomes from around the country, was occasioned by the visit of the 'great white fleet' to Auckland in August 1908. The fleet of 16 battleships was sent by US President Theodore Roosevelt to circumnavigate the world as a demonstration of American naval power, and was warmly welcomed to New Zealand.
