Maud and David Morris were in their late 50s when they moved out of their family home in Lynfield, Auckland, and made it available to their son, his partner and their baby daughter, and their own daughter and her husband. Their children and their partners could not afford to buy their own homes, and this arrangement helped them to save money. Maud was able to stay at home and care for her children while they were growing up, but she said that 'today there is no way for a mother to stay at home'. Mothers' earnings were needed to meet families' financial needs.
