Kilbryde: exterior

Sir John and Lady Campbell are shown on the lawn of their home, Kilbryde, in Parnell, Auckland, in May 1906. Born in Edinburgh, John Logan Campbell arrived in Auckland aged 22 and with William Brown set up as the town's first merchants in 1840. The firm flourished and eventually Campbell became regarded as the 'father of Auckland', a status confirmed when he gave his estate, One Tree Hill, to the city as Cornwall Park. Like other members of the financial elite in Auckland and Dunedin, Campbell enjoyed a privileged lifestyle with a large house and servants.
