Three generations of Māori were photographed in 1943 at a garden project near Levin which was producing vegetables for the armed forces. These volunteers were working under the direction of the Maori War Effort Organisation, which was set up to organise recruitment and patriotic activities among Māori. It also played a welfare role with young Māori working in towns and cities. Based on tribal committees, the organisation later provided a model for the Maori Women's Welfare League.
