Around the base of the Egmont volcano, faults and fractures have allowed sticky lava to ooze to the surface and form steep, rounded hills known as cumulodomes. These include German Hill, Pukeiti, the Beehives on the mountain’s southern side, Skinner Hill, and the Dome on the north-western slopes. German Hill, a grass-covered knoll near Egmont Village, was named after the ‘German’ (ethnically Polish) families who settled around its base in the 1870s. The white fence posts and yellow sign indicate a buried gas pipeline – one of many that form a network across the region.
