Story: Taranaki region

Mt Taranaki

Mt Taranaki

The volcanic peak of Mt Taranaki (Taranaki Maunga) dominates the region’s skyline, and is responsible for the moist climate and fertile soils. Māori have long revered the mountain, and its image is used in many facets of Taranaki life – logos, advertisements, sports-club badges, corporate letterheads, and even on gravestones. This view of the mountain’s northern slopes is from the alpine grasslands of the Pouākai Range.
