The North Island also saw considerable railway building in the 1870s, financed by Julius Vogel’s overseas borrowing. The most dramatic project was the very steep rail track over the Remutaka Range to link Wellington with the Wairarapa. On the eastern side of the range a special Fell engine was used which gripped a central rail.
