When Hongi Hika decreed that a Ngāpuhi raiding party would spare only those of Te Arawa who passed between Te Ao-kapurangi's thighs, she stood astride the ridgepole of the meeting house on Mokoia Island while her relatives crowded into the house to take refuge.
