Palm oil kernel from Malaysia and Indonesia is unloaded at the port of Tauranga. It is sold to sheep, beef and dairy farmers as a low-cost stock food. More than one million tonnes of palm kernel, a by-product of the extraction of palm oil, were imported to New Zealand in 2008. Increased imports of stock food, fertilizer and other agricultural products have caused a rise in the level of imported inputs to the primary sector since the 1990s.
