Helena Schenkel (front) of the Clerical Workers'  Union sits with fellow unionists (left to right) Rosslyn Noonan, Angela Foulkes and Christine Gillespie at the launch of the union's campaign to renegotiate its main award in 1989. Schenkel was the first female president of the Canterbury Clerical Workers' Union when she was elected in 1985.  She was also president of Rakau Te Kura, a branch of the Māori Women's Welfare League, and a member of the Māori advisory committee to the Federation of Labour.
