Individually named and decorated, these computers are ready to be taken home from Hiruharama School by graduates of the Computers in Homes (CIH) project. CIH supports low-income communities to use information technology for school and work. Families are trained at their children’s school to use the internet, e-mail and basic computer skills. Hiruharama School, near Ruatōria on the East Coast, is in an area where some homes have no electricity. Families taking part used donated laptops, brought to school each day for recharging. On graduation day in 2005 a huge hākari (feast) was prepared at the local marae, and local elders and the mayor of Gisborne attended.
