Men prepare to haul a huge kauri log out of the forest in Northland in the early 1900s. In the 19th and early 20th centuries vast areas of native forest were logged to provide timber for export and local use. By the 1920s, concerns about the diminishing resource prompted the Forest Service to research native forest growth and regeneration.
