Kikuyu grass thrives in the subtropical, frost-free northern part of New Zealand. In summer the horizontal stolons (stems) can grow 2.5 centimetres per day. However, the nutritional quality is only satisfactory in early summer, deteriorating rapidly during autumn. Controlling the spread of kikuyu is a major challenge for Northland farmers.
